To prepare to join world-traveling early music ensemble Lucidarium in this performance, an ensemble of music students rehearses with Shula from late September to mid November, mostly on Saturday late afternoons. Contact Shula for details if you're interested in enrolling. (Strictly speaking this isn't a SHAK project, but it shares our main focus -- early music with, by, and for kids!) The group is open to instrumental students aged 8-13 (or in 3rd-8th grade) depending on playing level.

Un Bel Matin d’Amor: Discovering the Music of Medieval Italy

Some music groups on the world-class touring circuit are just as masterful when it comes to engaging younger audiences, and the Italian group Lucidarium is one of them. For its second visit to Early Music Discovery, this vibrant and versatile ensemble shares songs and dances from 14th and 15th century Italy. Audience members discover the detective work behind modern reproductions of historical instruments – and then enjoy opportunities to sing along and even learn early Renaissance dance. A band of lucky local kid musicians even join the band onstage for a few dance tunes and a medieval-style jam session.
